water tank color question
I am about to install a rain catchment system on my house. I plan to store the collected water in 2-500 gallons tanks. I see online that there are 2 widely available colors of tanks, green and black.
I am planning on putting the tanks on the s side of my house, in full sun. Im not sure that the green poly tank will be totally opaque. Unfortunately the green tanks seem much more common than the black ones. What color would be best for me? Any of you folks have experiance with both black and green tanks? |
Re: water tank color question
Black, if any light reaches the water you will have algae. If it were me I'd bury the tanks.

Re: water tank color question
Any color fine-however, be prepared for algae growth.Be sure container is water safe plastic.Algae not harmful, but unappealing.
My system;general guide- 1) run through a sand filter, takes solids out to 200 microns.DE finer, but gives trickle flow unless under pressure. 2) if to drink, put some chlorine tablets in the filtered water or 5.25% bleach, then pass through an activated carbon charcoal filter.(2 inch or 4 in PVC 12 inches long filled with activated carbon)-the charcoal pulls out all chlorine and other contaniments. This system used all over SA, the water reservoir usually has the 3 in chlorine tablets in it,then it flows from the roof doen through the carbon filter. I have a few 300 lb drums of activated carbon made especially for the Golden Spur mine, for gold reclamation.I aquired it from an engineer who made it especially for gold mining. |
Re: water tank color question
Imo, black. Then build a small greenhouse around them and use the warmed water to assist plant growth/help prevent freezing. In summer you'll probably have to shade them unless you want pre-heated water.

Re: water tank color question
Not only algae but bacteria such as e coli thrive in warm water. Ground temperature is best.
